Beyond Therapy

I agree somewhat with Dorky that this episode detoured off of the subject. It could have been a really helpful and informative episode, like you guys normally do, but it just wasn't. 

There's a little too much goofiness and "inside joke" chit chat to really help a viewer that legitimately wants your takes on resources to help them with therapy. 

Why not film and edit it like other helpful episodes from the past? You'll have your research done and in order, show us examples, and list sites and numbers on the right. This was all kind of generic, so you couldn't provide that with this episode. 

There's a national mental health hotline 1-800-789-2647, available M-F from 8:30am - midnight, Eastern. You can call up and find out about resources in your area. 

Other places to look is your county or state's resource or health centers and hotlines. Some offer help for free, or pay on a sliding scale - based on your salary and what you can afford. 

No, you're not health experts, or meant to be people's only resource to find therapy - but if you're going to do an episode expressing a desire to help, you could do a better job next time.

Traditionally, people would only see a therapist if they had serious problems or if they had lots of money to throw away. It's much differernt now. I think there are many reasons to see a therapist. It could be for motivation, social skills, paranoia, relationship problems, financial problems, depression, and I'm sure many more reasons. Therapists can be very helpful so people can work out their problems and make their life better.

Therapists are still expensive. If you can find a way to have it covered by insurance or get discounted therapy, go for it. Don't pass up that chance. If you don't have that opportunity, though, you should do what you can to get the help you need. I just have my opinion, but it's never good to bottle things up or ignore it.

There are other things you can do besides therapy. It is not recommended for someone that needs serious help, but here are a few ideas I have. Talk to someone close to you. Someone that you can fully open up to. Sometimes just talking it out brings clarity to a situation. You can also write in a journal or on a blog. Again, someplace that you can be fully honest and free to express your feelings. Another idea I have is talk to someone that has been in the same situation. Sometimes a parent or relative or even a friend has dealt with the same issues that you are going through and may know what has worked or not worked for them.

I don't think everyone needs to see a therapist, but I think that most people could get a lot from one or from other therapeutic sources. Don't cheat yourself by pushing your needs aside.

I love that the episode title shot says 'Beyond Therapy' right on Julia. So apropos.

I just want to comment that this set up looks the best so far - a plain wall and beige couch, plus the simple pillow and throw behind give it something extra compared to that big mushy grey couch you guys were on before. It's really clean and classy looking. Also much more comfortable looking than the stiff table and chairs!

I saw a therapist several years ago, during college, in order to address a little bit of depression, and I found it very helpful.  Since then, I haven't really felt the need to go back - but then, my best friend is a real live psychologist, so maybe I just get her services for free :)

Don't forget that a lot of health insurance plans cover services for mental well-being, including therapy.  I know people who have gone without when they could really have used a little head shrinking because they didn't know their health insurance would cover the cost.

Mary, you look STUNNING in this episode.  That shade of green really brings out your eyes and your gorgeous skin tone.

Julia: have you ever considered therapy or do you currently see a therapist because you seem to exhibit some issues that could be dealt with through therapy.

This episode fell flat for me.  First of all, what's up with the catty behavior at the beginning?  Not fun to watch.  Not every New Yorker is in therapy.  New Yorkers are JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE only they live in NYC.  Watch out for sweeping generalizations.

And I would love to see one episode where you guys don't mention men.  Is that all you guys are ever thinking about?  It concerns me since this doesn't help a woman in today's world to keep encouraging this navel-gazing obsession with the simpletons we call men.
