I'm a guy who could probably pull off some or most of those looks (skinny jeans, etc.) and yet I would NEVER do it. A bow tie? You've got to be kidding me. My personal motto is that you should never look like you're trying too hard or not trying at all.
I so disagree!!! One person's "trying too hard" is another person's "dressing like I care." It's all a matter of perspective.
I enjoy it when someone clearly cares enough about their wardrobe to carefully put it together, and try out something new.
Then again, I'm a huge fan of the preppie look, which always looks like it's trying too hard. hahah

Great stuff, Mary, although as a guy that works in the suit industry, I'm surprised you failed to mention "layers." Layering is something that not enough men do, but (as you can see in a lot of the photos featured in the video) looks fantastic. And now that the weather is cooling down, the layered look is coming back in style big time. And for the Fall, I'm actually with Meghan: I much prefer the monochromatic looks. I like to layer various shades of gray or brown/taupe. The one thing that I made sure to get at the start of this season was a brown 3-piece suit. I spent hours in front of the mirror trying on various combinations to go with it, and I'm loving it. Layer, guys. Layer.
Okay, so I just noticed on the tmiweekly home page your big blog entry about men's layering, so I'm dumb and I apologize, but still. It's worth mentioning twice. :-)

I don't like those skinny wool ties. I owned some last time they were supposedly cool and they ended up a flash in the pan. plus they are hard to tie. I sort of like the skinny bow ties better than the big ostentatious ones. Funny when Tucker Carlson stops wearing them they come back in style. Julia is right skinny pants and fur coats require Zoolander status. Plus the pants look uncomfortable But I get the different shades of grey etc idea. I need to throw away all of my khakis. Two questions... front pleats on pants are a no now? and what about shoes??? and as to tension between m and j? huh? where?
yea, is it a jealousy thing? i think julia is gorgeous, funny, witty, intelligent, and nice! why is marys tone always so condescending?

Is it just me, or is there some tension or something going on with Mary towards Julia. I've been watching these episodes and on more than one occassion have noticed Mary making passive-aggresive comments to/about Jules. What's the deal? I thought you guys were friends?
Anyway...love the show/you guys. Very entertaining stuff. Also, Mary - I love how Mason is always falling asleep in yoru lap. Too cute! :)
ME-OW girls!! Julia and Mary, can you please tone down your rampant dislike for each other? Sniping on the air is no good for getting your show off the ground. And you don't seem to have much authority on the subject of dressing boyfriends in fall 08 fashions considering you don't actually HAVE boyfriends in fall 08.
Last year I was big into vests. This year I think cardigan sweaters are going to be my staple.
It is nice to see a bit of class come back into Men's fashion. For too long casual has been king.
I'm pretty lucky because my man is actually a bit of a fashionplate and enjoys putting outfits together himself. Unfortunately, he loves to wear the same shirts/outfits REPEATEDLY, until I'm left to either pester him to go get something new already, or just surprise him with some new pieces I know would get him out of the old pieces he's worn to death.
Good call on the skinny pants thing, ladies---not many dudes can convincingly pull those things off, especially when many a man((such as mine)) suffers from skinny chicken legs syndrome. Ditto the male embroidery thing---I sure don't wanna see dudes wearing more glitter and stiching than *I* do!
All I can say is that a flattering pair or two of jeans matched with well-kept loafers/boots and a really interesting and nicely-fitted funky shirt always works well for my view of a sharp-dressed man. And in the winter, if you can continulously lure your fella into the allure of a crisp velvet or wool blazer, more power to you both!
what do we like to wear??? the question is what are we willing to wear??? honestly less is more...when we dress ourselves we try to put on as little as possible... we start w bowe ties and go from there...and pink is our inspiration... the question is where do u start when u get dressed? we're confused...please help.
